Nixon in China; the Shanghai Communiqué
Nixon's visit ended the two states' mutual non-recognition since 1949. The communiqué, negotiated by Kissinger and Zhou Enlai, stated each side's positions separately and, on Taiwan, had the United States acknowledge that Chinese on either side of the strait maintain there is but one China, without endorsing the claim.
The communiqué is dated February 27 in some sources and February 28 in others; the visit ran February 21–28. Both dates are reported.
Set the one-China formula — acknowledge, not accept — that every later document reuses. The relationship's founding text is a deliberate ambiguity, and it has held.
