432 Hz vs 440 Hz Tuning
The United States was broadcasting a 440 Hz tone in 1936 — three years before the conference the conspiracy blames. The number came from a Chicago tuning-fork manufacturer who had been lobbying for it since 1900.

Executive Summary
The debate over musical tuning standards centers on whether the international standard of A=440 Hz should be replaced with A=432 Hz. Proponents of 432 Hz claim it is more natural, mathematically pure, historically authentic, and beneficial to human health. Some conspiracy theories allege 440 Hz was deliberately imposed by the Nazi regime or other entities to create discord; the United States was broadcasting a 440 Hz tone in 1936, which settles that. This entry examines the documented history, scientific claims, and contested assertions.
UET Pattern Recognition: The 432/440 Hz debate represents a frequency-consciousness intersection where verifiable acoustic science meets contested claims about deliberate manipulation. Analysis requires separating documented history from speculation.
NOTE: This entry analyzes a topic with significant unverified claims alongside established acoustic science.
1. Historical Overview
Pre-Standardization Era
Before 1900:
- No universal pitch standard
- A varied from ~400 Hz to ~480 Hz by region and era
- Baroque period: Generally lower (A=415 Hz common)
- Classical period: Rising pitch trend
- 19th century: Continued variation
Historical A Frequencies:
| Era/Location | Approximate A |
|---|---|
| Baroque (1600-1750) | 415-430 Hz |
| Classical (1750-1820) | 420-435 Hz |
| Paris Opera (1858) | 448.6 Hz |
| French standard (1859) | 435 Hz |
| Covent Garden (1879) | 450 Hz |
Standardization Attempts
| Year | Standard | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| 1859 | A=435 Hz | French government |
| 1885 | A=435 Hz | Vienna conference |
| 1939 | A=440 Hz | International conference |
| 1955 | A=440 Hz | ISO adoption |
| 1975 | A=440 Hz | ISO 16:1975 |
The American Road to 440 (added 2026-09-27)
The article previously jumped from the French 435 to the 1939 London conference. That gap is where the real story sits, and filling it changes the conclusion of Section 5.
A=440 was American before it was international, and its most effective advocate manufactured tuning forks.
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| c. 1900– | J.C. Deagan, a Chicago maker of tuning forks, bells and mallet percussion, begins campaigning for A=440 |
| 1910 or 1917 | American Federation of Musicians adopts A=440 — sources conflict, see below |
| 1914 | The US Bureau of Standards asks Deagan to supply its tuning forks (c. 100–2,000 vibrations/sec) |
| 11 June 1925 | American Music Industries Chamber of Commerce adopts A=440 — the trade, not the musicians |
| August 1936 | WWV begins broadcasting a 440 Hz tone, "at the request of several music organizations"; it doubles as an hourly marker for chart recorders |
| May 1939 | London conference recommends 440 internationally — three years after the US was already transmitting it |
Unresolved date. Deagan-centred accounts place the AFM adoption at its 1910 convention; standard reference works give 14 May 1917, at the New Haven convention, as the adoption of the Scheibler pitch A=440. A 1910 resolution later formalised in 1917 would reconcile them, but that is inference. Recorded here as "1910 or 1917, sources differ" pending the AFM's own proceedings.
Why 440 and Not Another Number
Three reasons, all mundane, none mystical:
- It was a reduction, not an increase. American practice was high pitch — orchestral and band A near 452.5 Hz, military bands as high as 457 Hz. Against that baseline, 440 was the concession existing instruments could actually reach. The French 435 would have meant rebuilding them.
- Temperature did much of the work. The 1859 diapason normal specified 435 at 15 °C. Wind instruments in a warm hall play that same standard at close to 440. American makers found 435 difficult to hold at room temperature; 440 described what instruments were already doing.
- 440 factors; 439 does not. The 1939 conference considered 439 Hz and rejected it because 439 is prime and therefore hard to generate accurately by frequency division in a laboratory. 440 = 2³ × 5 × 11 suits a standards lab, a broadcaster and a fork manufacturer alike.
Status: all of the above is from secondary sources and is marked [?]. The primary document

2. 432 Hz Claims Examined
Mathematical Claims
Claim: 432 Hz is mathematically superior
Analysis:
| Property | 432 Hz | 440 Hz |
|---|---|---|
| Divisibility | 2^4 x 3^3 = 432 | 2^3 x 5 x 11 = 440 |
| Factors | 1,2,3,4,6,8,9,12,16,18,24,27,36,48,54,72,108,144,216,432 | 1,2,4,5,8,10,11,20,22,40,44,55,88,110,220,440 |
Assessment:
- 432 has more integer factors
- Mathematical "elegance" is subjective
- No physical significance proven
- Music works at both frequencies
Natural/Cosmic Claims
Claim: 432 Hz aligns with natural vibrations
Specific Claims:
- "Schumann resonance" alignment
- Earth's vibration
- Water structure
- Planetary frequencies
Scientific Analysis:
| Claim | Reality |
|---|---|
| Schumann resonance | ~7.83 Hz (not related to 432) |
| Earth vibration | Multiple frequencies, none = 432 |
| Water structure | No verified 432 Hz effect |
| Cosmic tuning | No scientific basis |
Historical Claims
Claim: Ancient civilizations used 432 Hz
Analysis:
- No measurement technology existed
- Instruments varied widely
- No documentary evidence
- Retroactive attribution
Claim: Verdi preferred 432 Hz
Reality:
- Verdi advocated for A=432 Hz in 1884
- This is documented
- Called for lower standard due to rising pitch
- Does not prove mystical properties
Nazi Conspiracy Claim
Claim: Nazis/Goebbels imposed 440 Hz for mind control
Historical Reality:
- 1939 conference was international
- Nazi Germany attended but did not dominate
- Conference held in London
- Multiple nations supported 440 Hz
- No evidence of occult motivation
3. Scientific Perspective
Acoustic Science
Frequency Perception:
- Human hearing: ~20 Hz to ~20,000 Hz
- Pitch perception is relative
- No absolute pitch for most people
- Context determines musical meaning
8 Hz Difference:
- A=432 Hz vs A=440 Hz = 8 Hz difference
- Approximately 31 cents (1/3 semitone)
- Perceptible but small
- Within natural variation
Psychoacoustic Research
Studies on Tuning:
- Limited formal research
- Some listener preference studies exist
- Results mixed and contested
- No definitive health effects proven
Placebo Considerations:
- Expectation effects significant
- Blind studies rare
- Subjective reporting dominant
- Confirmation bias likely
Cymatics (Sound Visualization)
Claim: 432 Hz creates more beautiful patterns
Analysis:
- Cymatics demonstrates sound visualizes in patterns
- Pattern depends on frequency and medium
- Many frequencies create "beautiful" patterns
- Cherry-picking of examples common
- Not evidence of superiority
4. Music Industry Reality
Current Standard
440 Hz Dominance:
- ISO international standard
- Most orchestras use 440-443 Hz
- Electronic instruments calibrated to 440 Hz
- Recording industry standard
Exceptions:
- Historical performance: Often 415 Hz
- Some orchestras: 442-443 Hz
- Individual preference variations
Practical Implications
If Using 432 Hz:
- All instruments must be retuned
- Cannot easily play with 440 Hz instruments
- Recording/broadcasting issues
- No standard repertoire
5. Conspiracy Analysis
Nazi/Occult Claims
Claim Structure:
- Goebbels/Nazi party imposed 440 Hz
- Deliberate frequency to control masses
- Occult motivation
- Mind control purpose
Evidence Examination:
| Claim | Evidence Level |
|---|---|
| Nazi involvement | They attended conference (minimal role) |
| Occult motivation | No documentation |
| Mind control intent | No documentation |
| Deliberate harm | No evidence |
Counter-Evidence:
- The United States was already broadcasting a 440 Hz standard tone in August 1936 — three years before the conference the claim is built on. This single fact refutes the claim without requiring any argument about anyone's motives, which is why it leads.
- The American number had been settled domestically since the 1910s–1920s (see The American Road to 440 above), driven by an instrument manufacturer and a trade association
- Conference in London, not Berlin; Goebbels was not present
- Multiple nations supported it; practical broadcasting and manufacturing reasons are documented
What replaces the claim. The story's emotional core — a standard was set by an interested party, and nobody asked the musicians — is half true, and the true half is more interesting than the invention. The interested party was J.C. Deagan, a Chicago tuning-fork manufacturer, working from 1900; the institutions were the American Federation of Musicians and a trade chamber; and the national standards laboratory bought its forks from him. Named actor, documented commercial interest, no conspiracy required.
This is the difference between correcting a reader and teaching one, and it is the reason this entry exists rather than being omitted.
